New Tanker Trucks for Fire Protection

The District recently obtained a $95,000 loan through the State Fire Marshall's Revolving Loan Fund with a match of 5%. The loan is to fund the purchase and retrofitting of two tanker trucks for the fire department. These tankers will substantially increase the amount of water available for firefighting.

Trustees to Meet in Concord Township

The regular meeting of the SHJFD Board of Trustees will be held Thursday, March 12, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Concord Township building on State Route 136 in Sugar Tree Ridge. The meeting is open to the public.

Recruitment Open Houses

The SHJFD will hold two open houses for anyone with an interest in joining the department. Meet our volunteer firefighters and EMTs when you visit at the Mowrystown Fire Station. New member applications will be available to fill out or to take with you. The Open Houses will be held on

March 26 at 7:00 p.m.

April 26 at 3:00 p.m.

Chief Mosely elected HCFECA president...

Congratulations to Chief Kevin Mosely on his election to President of the Highland County Fire/EMS Chiefs Association for 2009.

Chief Gregory L. Young -- "One of Our Own"

Former Chief Young died Tuesday, February 3, at his home in Mowrystown.

The trustees, firefighters, and EMTs of the Southern Highland Joint Fire District extend our heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of our former Chief Gregory L. Young.

Fire & EMS Levy Passes 177 - 86

According to news reports this morning, the SHJFD Fire and EMS Levy on the ballot February 3 passed by a vote of 177 For and 86 Against.

The firefighters, EMTs, and trustees of the SHJFD thank all those supporting this important levy that will help us improve our service to District citizens. Also, we thank all the 263 voting citizens that braved the inclement weather to go to the polls.

Open House Thank You

The SHJFD Trustees, Chief Mosely, and all the volunteer firefighters and EMTs thank everyone that attended our Open House at the Fire Station on January 24. We had an enjoyable time talking and visiting with each and everyone that came. We thank you for the opportunity to show you our trucks and equipment and to explain the operation of the new fire district and need for a new operating levy. We are very grateful for your support.
